Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare and the Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Development Program, Inc. Award Four Scholarships to Advance Oncology Nursing
NEW YORK, July 16, 2019 – Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare and Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Development Program, Inc. are proud to announce the recipients of a new joint scholarship to four doctoral nursing candidates seeking to improve healthcare for cancer patients. This scholarship, made possible by a grant from the Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Development Program, Inc. to Jonas Philanthropies, Inc., will sponsor the first cadre of Jonas-Flynn Scholars over a two-year term. This marks the first time the organizations have partnered to award scholarships in support of their shared causes.
The following recipients are all D.N.P candidates pursuing doctoral degrees with a specialization in Oncology Nursing:
- Julie Earls, BSN, RN from the Fairfield University School of Nursing and Health Studies was selected for her research on oncology nurse residency programs and internships. Ms. Earls was a Flynn Fellow in 2014 at Stamford Hospital.
- Emily Kopas, BSN, RN, OCN, also from the Fairfield University School of Nursing and Health Studies, was selected for her work focusing on caring and contributing to the wellbeing of patients and families affected by a cancer diagnosis. Ms. Kopas was a Flynn Fellow at Greenwich Hospital in 2015.
- Kaitlin Phelan, BSN, RNfrom theUniversity of San Diego Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, received the scholarship for her research on the pivotal role nursing plays in improving outcomes for patients with cancer-related fatigue. Ms. Phelan was a Flynn Fellow at Dana Farber in 2015.
- Molly Smith BSN, RN, OCN, from the Columbia University School of Nursing was selected for her work as an Oncology Research Nurse and her role as a preceptor and mentor for several Flynn Fellows.

oncology nursing clinical practice and research in order to improve the
prevention, treatment, and quality of life outcomes for cancer patients and
their families.”
Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship Program was created by Mr. Flynn in loving memory of his wife who died of ovarian cancer in 2013. Out of respect for the wonderful quality of nursing care she received during her illness, the program was developed to help stimulate the career interest and foster the professional development of potential Oncology Nurses who are rising seniors at several leading undergraduate nursing schools. Since implementing this program in 2014, it has nearly tripled — from 13 Flynn Fellows in 2014 to 33 Fellows in 2019 and has produced over 100 practicing oncology nurses to date.
