I have worked in pediatric nursing for 25 years in a number of different pediatric settings. In 2000, I obtained my Master’s degree and certification as a pediatric nurse practitioner and had the opportunity to work with children and their families at Parkland Health and Hospital System’s school-based clinics in Dallas, Texas. I currently hold a faculty position at Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where I teach courses in pediatrics and leadership, and assist with various nursing lab courses. I served as the coordinator of our nursing simulation labs for 7 years and serve as a clinical instructor for pediatrics at the University of Colorado Health at Memorial Central Hospital. I also work part-time when I can in pediatric home care. I am very passionate about the health and development of children and their families and strive to inspire this same passion in the nursing students I have the privilege to teach. I have had the privilege to mentor many nurses and faculty colleagues over the years. I served as a faculty advisor for the Pikes Peak Community College Association of Nursing Students (PPCCANS) for the past two years. I am an active member of the PPCC Diversity Team, where I work with other faculty across the college to ensure that students and faculty of all diversities feel welcome at our college. I also belong to the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP).
Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Scholar – Psych-Mental Health
Dissertation: Sexting and its Effect on Teen Mental Health. I am currently exploring the comprehensiveness of teen sexting tools for measurement and looking specifically at the Adolescent Media Practice Model as a theoretical framework for my study. I hope to devise a teen sexting survey tool that will help me explore predictors of teen sexting and ultimately devise a preventive framework that can be used in the primary care setting with teens as part of their sexual health assessment.
