Biography

Emily Kopas is a third year Family Nurse Practitioner Student obtaining her DNP degree at Fairfield University’s Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing. She began her nursing career on a neuro orthopedic floor and later found her passion for oncology nursing as a Flynn Oncology Fellow at Greenwich Hospital in 2015. She continues to work at this hospital as an Oncology Certified Nurse and Palliative Care Recourse Nurse on the medical oncology floor and chemotherapy infusion center. Her compassion for caring and contributing to the wellbeing of patients and families affected by a cancer diagnosis is demonstrated by her recent award nominations which include the Nurse Daisy Award and Quality Employee of the Month Award. She is involved in the Nursing Research and Palliative Care Nursing Committees at Greenwich Hospital as well as an active member of the Oncology Nursing Society and Sigma Theta Tau international Honor Society. In addition to her professional clinical development, Emily also shares a passion for teaching. She is currently is a nurse preceptor for new graduate nurses, a mentor to future Flynn Fellows as well as a charge nurse on the oncology unit. Upon graduating with her DNP degree, Emily aspires to continue serving the whole person to improve the quality of life in patients and families with chronic illnesses.

Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Veterans Healthcare Scholar – Palliative Care
Dissertation: Assessing Spiritual Well-Being in Oncology Patients
This quasi- experimental study will include a pre-assessment and post-assessment design. This intervention will include: a) conducting a nursing spiritual assessment using the FACIT-Sp tool (permission was obtained from David Cella); b) followed by early referral and visitation by chaplain: c) and then re-administration of the FACIT-Sp Tool, post chaplain visit.
