Jessica Miller is currently a BSN to PhD student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing. Her research area focuses on improving self-management behaviors in individuals who are residing in rural areas diagnosed with multiple chronic conditions. She is also pursuing her adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner specialty as well as completing the course work to be a Certified Nurse Educator. She obtained her bachelor’s in nursing from UNMC in Norfolk, Nebraska in 2015. She has worked in nursing since the age of 15 where she began working as a CNA in rural Nebraska nursing homes until obtaining her BSN. After obtaining her degree she immediately was accepted as a PhD student and began working as a registered nurse at the Norfolk Veteran’s Home. She also worked as a graduate assistant teaching, mentoring and developing web-based materials to assist study learning at UNMC in Norfolk for two years. Since then she has continued to work as a graduate assistant and is currently working on a NIH funded research study as the program coordinator. Throughout her time at UNMC she has been awarded the Nellie House Craven research Scholarship (2016-2018), the Wilbur and Valerie Moon Medical Scholarship (2016-2018) and the ALIGN APP grant scholarship (2017-2018). After graduation she plans to work in academia in rural communities to improve the quality of life of patients through teaching, research, and practice.
