Upon completion of my Master’s program at Molloy College in 1992, I believed was “educationally complete” and would never go back to school, however that viewpoint has changed. Having worked in long term care for the past twenty years, as a leader and visionary, I believe I have the tools to impact practice. The delivery of health care, the nursing curriculum in colleges and universities and the quality and preparation of newly licensed nurses are changing. Nursing leaders must be in a position to influence change so that our profession thrives and our clients receive the best possible care. Based on this I applied to the Nursing Doctorate (PhD) Program at Molloy College. My growth in leadership has been one filled with many opportunities in both acute and long term care specifically as staff nurse, nurse preceptor, nurse educator, Director of Nursing Education and roles in Risk Management, Infection Control, Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (where I was awarded certification as a Quality Certified Professional) to Assistant Director of Nursing. In terms of leadership plans and related opportunities identified in the Jonas program, I would like to supplement the research/clinical practice in the area pertaining to ophthalmic health specifically with the older adult as s/he transcends from long term care to other healthcare settings as visual impairment coupled with other multiple comorbidities becomes paramount in the older adult. It is my hope that interacting with this population can promote positive outcomes and a more viable quality of life.
