My name is Julie Earls and I just started my second year at Fairfield University in their Doctor of Nursing Practice-Family Nurse Practitioner program. I currently work at Yale New Haven Smilow Cancer Hospital on the Hematology-Oncology unit. I have been there for three years and I love it. I have learned so much about chemotherapy and how to care for cancer patients as well as patients undergoing bone marrow transplants, and just recently Car-T cell immunotherapies. I was on a cardiac-observation unit for a year before that also at Yale New Haven Hospital.
I am doing my capstone project on education guidelines for neutropenic patients at discharge. I have seen a deficit in this area where I work, and I want to improve how patients and their families learn and follow these important instructions when they are discharged with low white blood cell counts.
I graduated Fairfield University in 2015 with my bachelor’s in nursing. I had the honor of being a Flynn Fellow at Stamford Hospital my junior going into senior year summer where I interned on the oncology unit.
I was the recipient of the 2015 Mu Chi Student Performance Award as part of the Sigma Theta Tau honors society at Fairfield University my senior year. I absolutely loved my time at Fairfield University when I was an undergraduate, and have loved my experience in their graduate school of nursing.
