Katherine Monaghan , BSN, RNUniversity of San Diego DNP
Katherine Monaghan graduated from Radford University in 2005, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. While serving as a Naval Officer, she developed into an experienced and certified Intensive Care nurse. Her time in the Navy culminated as the Division Officer of the Intensive Care Unit at Naval Medical Center San Diego, earning her a Navy Commendation Medal. Katherine completed her Navy career but her commitment to serving service members continued while working for two years at Navy Health Research Center as a medical expert on injuries sustained in combat. Katherine best exemplified the duties as a naval officer during her time served in 2010, as an intensive care nurse deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan. During this life changing experience, she developed an understanding of what a combat veteran has been through and how to treat them at injury, during recovery, and beyond. After wearing the uniform for almost 9 years, Katherine decided to pursue an advanced practice nursing degree that would allow her to continue the honor of caring for veterans each and every day. Her DNP project will include targeting chronic health conditions within the veteran population, specifically hypertension. As a female veteran, Katherine is alarmed with the growing population of female homeless veterans in San Diego County. She is currently engaging with local VA homeless resource teams as well as reviewing local and state legislation to see how she can make an impact in improving care for this vulnerable population
