Maria Delia Crosby
Maria Delia Crosby is an RN and Doctor of Nursing Practice candidate with a concentration on Adult-Gerontology at the University of Vermont. Born in the Philippines, she trained as a book illustrator with attention to human interest. A grant from international NGOs allowed her to study the trade of book publishing in Amsterdam and became an art director at publishing houses in the Philippines and Canada. In Manila, she was involved in social justice and used her skills as an advocate through political cartooning. As a young student of Zen, Maria followed her old Zen master to Canada. When that teacher retired, she became a student of Sunyana Graef Roshi at the Vermont Zen Center from 2002 up to the present. In Vermont, Maria was Director of Communications at Burlington College. She contributed to local papers including Seven Days and Vermont Woman. She volunteered at hospitals, wrote letters to prisoners interested in meditation, and raised funds for SD Ireland Cancer Research Fund. Meeting cancer patients led her to question aging, sickness, and death, challenging her to seek the key to alleviate human suffering. As a post-baccalaureate premedical student at UVM, Maria joined a research team studying the phylogenetic relationships of grammitid ferns species. In 2016, she was admitted to the Direct Entry Nursing Program at UVM College of Nursing. Maria is married to Nôwa Crosby, a violin maker and a Zen priest at the Vermont Zen Center. They live in Shelburne, Vermont with their cat Uling.
