Sara Mansoorali Mithani, is a third year BSN-PhD student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Nursing where she conducts bench science research in the Laboratory for Sleep Neurobiology. She completed her BSN in 2016 from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. Currently she is studying optogenetic manipulations of cholinergic neurons in the pons to define sleep and cardiovascular function. In addition, she participated as a fellow for the Graduate Summer Opportunity to Advance Research during the Summer of 2017 at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Sara was selected in the NIH-NINR Graduate Partnership doctoral fellowship training program where she will complete her dissertation research at the NIH main campus starting January 2019. She is interested in identifying genomic and phenotypic alterations in civilian and military populations who suffer from traumatic brain injury with a focus on sleep alterations and development of neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, she has served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate statistics and graduate-level physiology, works PRN as an RN, and plays an active role as a Midwest region board member for the Aga Khan Foundation USA.
