Shannon Johnson is an advanced practice nurse (FNP and Adult CNS) with extensive expertise in caring for patients with severe chronic illness and their families. She has a broad base of knowledge and skills focused on cardiology (i.e., coronary artery disease, chronic heart failure, and end-stage cardiac disease), liver transplantation, and chronic renal failure requiring dialysis. Ms. Johnson has been the Clinical Research Coordinator on numerous clinical trials and served on the Norman Regional Hospital research committee. She has held adjunct faculty positions while maintaining an active clinical practice. In academia, Ms. Johnson has taught and mentored students at all levels of nursing education, with her most recent appointment at the University of South Alabama teaching graduate level students. Ms. Johnson graduated with a BSN from University of Oklahoma College of Nursing in 1994, a MS from University of Oklahoma in Exercise Science in 1998, MS in Nursing the Acute Care CNS pathway from University of Oklahoma College of Nursing in 2002, and a Post-Master’s Certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner from University of Massachusetts, Boston in 2011. She is currently a student in the Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences (Nursing Bio-behavioral sub-track) at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Ms. Johnson’s research focus is the association of chronic disease with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She is particularly interested in the traumatogenic potential of chronic diseases and changes in life circumstance, which may produce maladaptive illness coping over the life course and inhibit effective self-management strategies.
