I am currently a student in the EdD program for nursing education at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. My focus of study involves the role of health and wellness for student and professional nurses. The goal being to create nursing programs and curriculum that includes wellness and preventive healthcare education. Registered and Advanced Practice Nurses would receive tools and knowledge to support their own healthy practices, in addition to being able to educate patients and families. Nurses will better understand nutrition, activity, sleep and balanced mental health practices, and their cumulative role in overall wellness. The importance of this was noted first while functioning as a pediatric primary care APN. However, the impact of providing healthy and balanced living techniques to parents became more apparent in my current clinical position in Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics. Receiving feedback from families who have applied wellness practices at home about the astounding changes they have experienced has been illuminating and gratifying. Personally, the principles have also been beneficial for my own family, both physically and mentally. I strive to implement health and wellness education throughout nursing programs to support our future nurses, ideally reducing stress and burnout, and empowering them to educate the patients they will care for.
