Biography

Antionella “Shelley” Upshaw, MSN, RN, is a full-time doctoral nursing student in the research-focused PhD program at Southern University and A&M College. Antionella received her BSN and MSN from Southern University and BS in Economics and Finance from McNeese State University. Antionella teaches in undergraduate level nursing courses. Currently, as assistant professor, she leads senior level nursing students in course/clinical Community Health. In her faculty role, she focuses on teaching basic nursing skills to graduating seniors on community populations at risk and major issues affecting community health and community health nursing. Mrs. Upshaw is constantly striving to prepare the next generation of nurses to advance the health of the nation’s changing multiethnic, aging population. Her clinical background includes medical surgical, case management, community health, oncology, hospice and home health nursing. She has worked in the Baton Rouge community as a nurse and advocate for the last 14 years. Her research interests include Aging/Geriatrics/Long-term care. She hopes to address the unique needs of older adults managing chronic illness as they move across providers, services and settings to offer solutions that provide safe, high quality, evidence based cost-effective care. Mrs. Upshaw is a past recipient of the Board of Regents Nursing Fellowship and Baton Rouge District Nurses Association – Edith Lobue Scholarship. She currently serves on Baton Rouge District Nurses Association Board as Health Policy Board Member. Professional organizations include Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Hospice and Palliative Nursing Association.
