Brandi Parker Cotton

University of Rhode Island PhD
Biography

As a current PhD student at the University of Rhode Island, I am interested in the area of poverty-driven mobility and negative health outcomes. I am interested in the intersection of public health policy and low-income families, specifically exploring how social determinants of health regarding access to safe and affordable housing impact the trajectory of child and adolescent health. I have worked as a psychiatric nurse practitioner within community health centers since graduating from Yale School of Nursing in 2008. I have volunteered with the Rhode Island Free Clinic, as a psychiatric prescriber and have been involved with several outreach services to the homeless population. I have precepted psychiatric nurse practitioner students from both Yale School of Nursing and the University of Rhode Island and have served as an ambassador with the National Health Service Corp (NHSC). After three years wtih the NHSC, I became deeply devoted to health disparities in vulnerable populations. I also serve as a Memership Ambassador with the American Public Health Association, Student Assembly. I am the recipient of the Wilcox Scholarship, National Health Service Corp Loan Repayment Program, and was inducted to Sigma Theata Tau as a Nurse Leader in 2011.
