Biography

Chun-An Sun is a DNP/PhD student in the School of Nursing at Johns Hopkins University. Chun-An’s research focuses on self-management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and health literacy in vulnerable populations. She aspires to become a family nurse practitioner to support individuals across the lifespan with limited resources, as well as to grow as a nurse researcher to contribute to scientific advances in primary care. Chun-An earned her MPhil in International Community Health from the University of Oslo, Norway in 2014 and her BSN from National Taiwan University, Taiwan in 2011. Chun-An has had opportunities to serve patients with NCDs and vulnerable populations in various communities. Her Master’s research, supported by a graduate scholarship from the Ivar Helles Foundation, involved a field study exploring experience and meaning of hypoglycemia to patients with diabetes in Cambodia. In collaboration with a local NGO and its peer-educator networks, she observed how patients with diabetes in low-income communities received diabetes care and participated in self-management. She also worked as a registered nurse in a cardiovascular medical unit in a large academic medical center and had experiences in community care related to NCDs as a public health nurse in Taiwan. Chun-An also has various volunteer experiences in serving people in need, including assisting people experiencing homelessness in both Oslo, Norway and Baltimore, MD.
