Darla Chapman, RN

University of Washington DNP
Biography

I am a registered nurse with nearly 20 years of professional nursing experience across many health care settings including acute care, home health and hospice, ambulatory care, and clinical research. For the last past 15 years I have worked within the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) and the Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) at the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) in Seattle. I have worked closely with a team of geriatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychologists to provide care to those newly diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia, and to promote and participate in the delivery of care and clinical research focusing on these disorders. In September 2013 I began my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) coursework at the University of Washington School of Nursing. Obtaining an advanced nursing degree focusing on the care of adults and older adults, combined with my ongoing experience and subspecialty in neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive disability, will enable me to care for patients on a broader level and practice as a nurse practitioner in a variety of settings, including primary care, long-term care, home health, clinical research, or within a neurology specialty. Upon graduation, I hope to combine my role as an advanced practice nurse with those of researcher and educator who leads care and research that will contribute to new evidenced-based practices and improve the health and outcomes for our nation’s aging veterans
