Biography

Liz Henderson is currently a Nursing Practice Specialist on the Burn, Reconstructive Surgery & OMFS Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She has worked at MGH for over 16 years having spent the majority of her clinical career as a nurse in the ED at MGH working with a diverse patient population including both victims and perpetrators of violence. Liz has a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Forensic Science from Boston University and a Master of Science in nursing with a specialty in Forensic nursing from Boston College. She is currently a doctoral student at Northeastern University with a focus on violence and injury prevention, and a special interest in firearm related suicide prevention. Liz’s interest in suicide prevention and firearm related injury stems from gaps in practice experienced during her tenure as an ED nurse and solidified by the literature pertaining to the identification, assessment, and discharge disposition of those who present to the acute care setting as a danger to themselves or to others. She has published and lectured on a variety of violence and injury related topics including the Duty to Warn, workplace violence, lateral violence, and care of the forensic patient population in the ED setting. Liz has received numerous clinical performance and academic excellence and achievement awards during her career, is a member of the International Association of Forensic Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau, the Emergency Nurses Association, the American Burn Association, and the Association of Critical Care Nurses
