Biography

Postpartum depression is often overlooked and undertreated in rural healthcare areas primarily due to shortages of providers and access issues. Heather Judkins’ goal is to prevent, meet, identify, and treat postpartum depression by making mental health care a standard in discharge planning. Heather is a first year Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student at the University of Wyoming. Heather’s journey into health care started by chance that was disguised as fate, she was offered an opportunity to work side-by-side with a surgeon in the operating room. During this time Heather found her passion for healthcare and sought to further her career in the field. She returned to school completing her Associate in Applied Science in 2015 and Bachelor’s of nursing degree in 2017. In her nursing career Heather has worked in the labor and delivery, medical surgical, and emergency departments. Through her work experience Heather realized that there is a need for mental health evaluations after hospital discharge, especially for postpartum mothers. Heather plans to create a post-discharge program that would utilize Tele-Health and Smart phone capabilities to assess the postpartum mother, establish trusting relationships, connect mothers to local resources, and ultimately treat postpartum depression and anxiety.
