Jennifer Sassman, BSN

University of San Diego DNP
Biography

I am currently in my first year as a Doctor of Nursing Practice student at the University of San Diego. Previously, I served five years on active duty as a Nurse Corps Officer, to include a deployment to Afghanistan. I currently work as a CCRN RN in the intensive care unit at Sharp Coronado Hospital in San Diego, CA. Being a veteran and having served overseas, I have a strong affinity to take care of our country’s veterans. I feel privileged to be able to provide care to those who have served our country. Chronic pain is such a prevalent affliction in this patient population. I am excited to implement an evidenced based practice project to alleviate pain and therefore suffering for San Diego’s veterans. By utilizing a self-care model as a non-pharmacological intervention, I strive to decrease chronic pain and increase overall quality of life. When active duty, I served as the military team leader in the ICU at Naval Medical Center San Diego when stationed there for two years. I also was awarded two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals; one for my service when stationed at Naval Hospital Guam and another for my deployment to Afghanistan supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. After my tour in Afghanistan, I was also awarded a Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a Jonas Scholar and improve healthcare for our veterans.
