I will be attending the University of Pittsburgh as a PhD student in the fall of 2014. I graduated from nursing school in 2007 and then for four years worked as a staff nurse on a busy telemetry unit caring for high acuity med/surge, cardiac, and respiratory patients. For the last three years I have been working on that same unit as an Assistant Nurse Manager. As a staff nurse, I took on leadership roles through the shared governance structure developed for our Magnet journey as chair of nursing quality and then coordinating council. While working I obtained my BSN at Penn state University. Many of the patients on my unit cope with chronic illness. I understand nurses have a critical role in helping them stay out of the hospital and live more fully. I hope through research to understand the complex interaction between patients and the healthcare system so that we can continue to help them improve their lives and stay outside the hospital.
Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Veteran Healthcare – Chronic illness
