Biography

Jori is pursuing a doctor of nursing practice degree at University of Michigan-Flint. She is passionate about underserved communities and is interested in a preventative health research project related to gun violence. She graduated with a bachelors of arts in early childhood education at Ohio Wesleyan University and pursued a teaching position the Dominican Republic. There, she witnessed religious, cultural, economic, and language barriers and realized she had a passion for teaching but also an interest in healthcare. When she returned to the United States, she started science prerequisites and gained employment as a clinical research coordinator for rheumatology at the University of Chicago. While pursuing a masters of science and registered nursing license at DePaul University, Jori attained the Albert Schweitzer fellowship. As part of the fellowship, Jori implemented the SMILES oral health program at a food agency that addressed resources, education, and access to care issues. Jori received additional funding for the program that is still maintained. Jori served as vice president and president of the Sigma Theta Tau International Society (STTI) chapter at DePaul and received the STTI research award as well as the Grace G. Peterson Endowed Scholarship. Jori received the Fatima Patel Clinical Excellence award upon graduation from DePaul University in 2014 and started working in an emergency department and then a cath lab before moving to Flint, Michigan. Jori worked at Hurley Medical Center in Flint as a critical care float nurse and started teaching clinical at University of Michigan-Flint.

Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Scholar – Preventive Health
Dissertation: My capstone is in formative stages but will focus on an intervention tool for patients treated at a level 1 trauma center with a firearms-related injury. A possible title might be “Interventions Early in the Post-Injury Course Which Influence Access to Violence Mitigation Services and the Effect on Recidivism.”
