Biography

As a nurse educator in a prelicensure program, the importance of developing new faculty to gain confidence and competence in teaching has informed my dissertation work. In University of Northern Colorado’s PhD in Nursing Education program, my topic of interest is developing clinical faculty competencies using simulation as the learning method. As the Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor at Linfield College, I have seen the need for assistance in development of new faculty into the role. Through a Sigma/ATI research grant award in 2018-19, I completed a pilot study using a simulation workshop to develop formative feedback competencies in clinical faculty. I presented this study at the Nurse Educators Conference in the Rockies July 2019. This pilot study has helped me develop a strong dissertation study protocol.
As a nurse practicing in adult trauma recovery, I developed an interest in the unique needs of older adults hospitalized for acute and critical injuries. In my doctoral studies I completed a quantitative study on geriatric trauma outcomes using the retrospective data from one year of a trauma registry. I presented this study in an oral competition at University of Northern Colorado and was awarded first place with funds to travel to a conference.
I plan to continue work in improving outcomes for acutely hospitalized older adults as well as the development of clinical faculty to serve schools of nursing in graduating professional nurses to care for these older adults.
