Biography

Juston Johnston understands that healthcare in this country is at a crossroads and he is committed being a leader in shifting the focus from disease management to prevention. Juston is currently enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) DNP program at the University of Wyoming (UW). He is also an alumnus of UW, where he obtained his BSN with a minor in adolescent development and family studies in the spring of 2017. Along with being a full-time student, Juston works as a school nurse for Denver public schools helping to ensure equal education opportunities for a diverse population of students, despite their potential health barriers. As a DNP-prepared FNP, Juston plans to pursue his passion of working with adolescents and young adults in a college/university-based student health setting. Specifically, as a self-identified gay man who is receiving his education in a rural frontier setting, Juston has witnessed the disparities that students identifying as LGBTQ+ face in relation to their health. With this and considering the growing population of college students who identify with some aspect of the LGBTQ+ community, Juston has chosen to use his DNP project toward increasing access to quality health care for this population. He recognizes concerns that face this community are only becoming more prevalent. Thus, rather than provide health care reactively, his mission is to prevent these inequalities and lead college/university student health clinics across the country to be proactive in addressing the unique heath issues of the LGBTQ+ community.
