Biography

Katherine Simmonds is an Assistant Professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. She is a graduate of the Harvard School of Public Health, the MGH Institute of Health Professions, and Cornell University. She is currently enrolled in the PhD program at the University of Rhode Island. Ms. Simmonds currently coordinates the advanced practice nursing Women’s Health specialty at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. In addition to teaching, Ms. Simmonds is a clinician a the Youth Health Center at Massachusetts General Hospital Chelsea-Roca and works with Action for Boston Community Development in their Family Planning Training program. She is the founder and former director of the Reproductive Options Education Consortium for Nursing, an initiative to bring training and curricula on reproductive options to nurse educators in New England and across the United States. She continues to serve as an advisory member to that organization. Ms. Simmonds has been involved in research including a study of women’s experiences with medical abortion, and two studies (1997 and 2007) on the inclusion of content on reproductive health in Massachusetts nursing schools. She has written numerous publications and presented at regional and national conferences on the topic of unintended pregnancy. Her current research interests include access to quality sexual and reproductive health care services, particularly among vulnerable populations.
