Biography

My name is Lisa Vaca, I am from a farming town in California, called Visalia. After high school I choose to enlist in the United States Navy. This ended up being the best decision I made for my career. The Navy is where I developed my passion for nursing. I enlisted as a Hospital Corpsman and I was able to serve on active duty for 6 years. I was stationed at Naval Medical Center San Diego, Fleet Surgical Team 9 aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard LHD-6 and at Miramar Marine Corps Airbase. The military granted me the opportunity to pursue my passion of caring for people. I graduated from University of Mary, Bismarck, ND with a Bachelors in Science in Nursing. The work ethic I learned in the Navy carried over to nursing school, as I graduated with honors and received both Sigma Theta Tau and Student Nurse of the Year distinctions. My love for emergency care motivated me to pursue a position at the Sanford Emergency Department in Bismarck, ND where I have worked for nearly 5 years. Applying to graduate school was important to me, I want to play bigger role in caring for patient’s and become an agent of change in rural North Dakota. While attending NDSU Doctor of Nursing program I anticipate the pursuit of research in diabetic care in adolescence. I hope to raise awareness of importance of prevention, early detection, and management of diabetes in North Dakota adolescents in the rural primary care setting.
