Biography

Maria Thompson is a psychiatric nurse practitioner at the VA Boston Healthcare System, Jamaica Plain, General Mental Health Outpatient Clinic caring for veterans with diverse mental health illnesses. She completed a one-year VA Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Residency program in 2014 at the Ronald H. Johnson VA in Charleston, South Carolina. In 2014, Maria trained as a facilitator at American Psychiatric Nurses Association’s Recovery to Practice Program. She obtained her Master’s in Mental Health Nursing in 2009 from State University of New York at Stony Brook and has served as a preceptor for nursing students and nurses. In 2009, Maria earned the Nurse of Excellence award from Long Beach Medical Center. In 2007, she was a candidate for Bridging the Gap: Linking Clinical Practice to Academia Nurse Preceptor/Faculty Training at the Greater NY Hospital Association. Maria received her Bachelor’s of Science in nursing from Adelphi University in 2003 and worked as a medical surgical nurse. She is an American Nurses Credentialing Center-certified medical surgical nurse. She has also received a Bachelor’s of Science in biology from Adelphi University. Maria, a Certified Coding Specialist who trained in ICD-10CM and PCS, worked in the health information management field prior to nursing. Maria is a member of the American Nursing Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs, and American Psychiatric Nursing Association. NYU Doctorate in Nursing Practice to utilize research in her practice, and later to develop preventive mental health interventions.
