Biography

Michael Schultz, BSN, RN, earned his BA in Philosophy from the University of California at San Diego and his BSN from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing. Since earning his BSN, he has worked in the operating room at Duke University Hospital. Inspired by several research experiences during his undergraduate career, Michael decided to return to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, where he is currently a PhD student and T32 trainee (Interventions to Prevent or Manage Chronic Illness). Michael studies the intersections of mind-body communication and social interactions in chronic illness self-management and prevention. His dissertation study will use biobehavioral methods to explore the role of mindfulness in type 1 diabetes self-management among college students. After graduation Michael plans to seek a faculty position at a research-intensive university, where he will continue the exploration of the abovementioned intersections and develop tailored chronic illness self-management interventions based on these explorations.
