Biography

Paul Smith is a doctoral student at University of Las Vegas, Nevada. He earned a Master’s degree in Nursing from Washington State University in community/public health with a focus on nursing education. He earned a BSN from University of Phoenix and an ADN from Southern Union State Community College in Alabama. Mr. Smith is an experienced and committed nurse educator who has recently accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Linfield College. He previously taught in the Associate Degree Nursing program at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. Before his academic career he practiced in the area of critical care at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland (2007) and Emory Healthcare in Atlanta (2000-2007). Mr. Smith is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor society, the National League for Nursing (NLN), and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Student award at Washington State in May 2010. He was also selected and participated in the NLN’s LEAD program in 2013. He served as secretary for the Oregon Council of Associate Degree Programs (OCAP) for several years. His research scholarship focuses on diversity, cultural competence, and health disparities seen in the LGBT community. He is passionate to learn more about how nurse educators can prepare future nurses and providers to adequately care for as well as meet the needs of the LGBT community.
