Rachael Mumbower, BSN, RN, is a PhD student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. She received a BSN from the Capstone College of Nursing in 2012. Mrs. Mumbower’s nursing career began in the emergency department of Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where she completed a nurse residency program and gained experience working with trauma patients and their families. During her time in the emergency department, she became interested in the long term outcomes of the patients she cared for who experienced traumatic brain injury. She enrolled in the PhD program in 2014 and began working with her primary mentor, Dr. Karen Heaton. Under Dr. Heaton’s guidance, she has presented posters at several regional conferences. Mrs. Mumbower’s research interests include traumatic brain injury, cognitive deficits, and the impact of sleep disturbances following traumatic brain injury. Her doctoral dissertation will be a qualitative descriptive study of the sleep experiences of traumatic brain injury survivors post-rehabilitation. After completing her doctorate, Mrs. Mumbower hopes to conduct research investigating the interplay between sleep, cognition, and functional outcomes in traumatic brain injury survivors in addition to exploring the sleep experiences of their caregivers. Additionally, she hopes to teach in undergraduate research courses to spark interest in research careers and recruit more doctorally prepared nurse researchers.
