The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill PhD
Biography

Becky Salomon obtained her MSN in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing through Vanderbilt University’s bridge program in 2013, previously earning her B.A. in Psychology and English from Wellesley College in 2008. In 2015, Ms. Salomon entered the PhD program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received the prestigious NRSA/NINR National Service Pre-doctoral Training Award from Interventions for Preventing and Managing Chronic Illness. She also received a highly competitive Graduate School Doctoral Merit Assistantship. Ms. Salomon’s long term research interest is the promotion of health and management of stress-induced symptoms through psychosocial interventions. Her work currently targets chronic stress in low income mothers and their children by integrating knowledge from nursing and psychoneuroimmunology, the study of the biological basis for the mind-body connection. The research focuses on the burden of psychoneurological symptoms in this highly vulnerable population and the impact of the symptoms on mothering, maternal function, and child development. Ms. Salomon’s ultimate goal is to develop community-based interventions that impact health through improved understanding and focused utilization of the mind-body connection. Ms. Salomon recently presented a systematic review on mediators of psychosocial interventions for depressive symptoms at the International Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses Annual Conference where she was awarded Second Place, Best Student Poster. She is currently writing a manuscript of her findings and incorporating green care, a category of interventions that use nature or animals to facilitate therapy. Additionally, Ms. Salomon is an advocate for individuals with mental illness and their right to evidence-based integrated care.
