Biography

I am Shanina Knighton, a PhD nursing student at Case Western Reserve University. My research interests are infection control and prevention. I have my first undergraduate degree from Baldwin-Wallace College majoring in Sports Medicine. My BSN was obtained from Ohio University. I have been working with veterans for six years and I love them very much. Within the VA system I have served as the Nursing Shared Governance Co-chair and secretary, I have implemented the my unit’s first newsletter, I served on the nursing research council for the past three years, I recently submitted a significant proposal for changes in the nursing staff shifts to provide better veteran care. I am currently working on 4 different infection control studies at the VA. As a graduate research assistant I have been working on studies for gerontology patients, different antibiotic medicines, healthcare-associated infections, healthcare worker and patient hand hygiene. I serve as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Case Chapter President, an active member of the PhD Student Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society Alpha Chapter active member. I was recently inducted at Case this past Spring. I work part-time as a Certified Mobile Research Nurse. I work on various studies administering and assessing trial products and subjects. I created a patent pending patient-controlled hand sanitation dispenser that affixes to the hospital bed rail for bed-bound patients to use. I am currently working on trying to get it to market. I won third place in a biomedical engineer concept competition.
