Biography

My name is Sharon D. Pickett, I’m current a DNP student at Western University of Health Sciences school of Graduate Nursing in Pomona, California. My nursing experience has progressed from an LVN, to a Registered Nurse, Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Case Manager, and Nurse Health Care Educator, for the past twenty-two years. Military nursing has accounted for twenty years of this experiences, completing inactive and active duty OEF/OIF deployment assignments in Europe, and other tours of duty within the continental United States. Presently, I’m a 30-year active reservist in the United States Army Reserves Nurse Corps. My military nursing leadership roles included Lead Nurse Case Manager for the Warrior Transition Unit (Wounded Warrior Program), at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. These assignments allowed me to work with seriously injured, ill and wounded warriors, along with their families managing their medical care, and transition return to duty, or medical retirement. I received from President Barack Obama the presidential coin, a Lifetime Achievement Award; Cambridge Who’s Who List, and Sigma Theta Tha Honor Society. My research/clinical practice interest is investigating if the new clinical Cervical Cancer screening guidelines interfere with Well Women return visits. The USPSTF recommends screening for cervical cancer in women age 21 to 65 years with cytology (Pap smear) every 3 years.
