Florida International University PhD
Biography

My name is Teresita Manahan Promise. My inspiration to pursue a vocation in nursing started from the influence of two of my aunts who have been nurses in USA for a long time. I finished my BSN in 1991 and worked with World Vision International for few years during a disaster recovery from a major volcanic eruption in the Philippines. I worked then with a respite care ministry shortly before I migrated to USA in 1996. I have 24 years of experience in nursing of which 10 years as a Nurse Practitioner. I have a broad experience as an RN from medical-surgical, telemetry, OR, ICU, PACU, Radiology, Cardiac Step-Down and Cath Lab. As an NP, I had worked in different settings: Primary Care, Workmen’s Comp/Occupational Health, Nuclear Stress Lab, Home Based Primary Care and Home Telehealth. Alongside with obtaining the MSN in Family Nurse Practitioner degree, I was voted by the FIU faculty for the Outstanding Community Service where I had a privilege of serving in a medical mission in India in 2004. Currently, I have the privilege of working with our nation’s heroes -the veterans for the past seven years. Pursuing the PhD degree will give me the opportunity to help these vulnerable population- older veterans with chronic conditions. My research trajectory will be focusing on how to assist the older veterans with chronic conditions to have better quality of life and to effectively apply self-care management skills.
