Biography

Timothy J. Sowicz is a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his BSN from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and his MSN from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to returning to graduate school, he practiced as a staff nurse for almost 9 years at some of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, including Massachusetts General Hospital and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Since 2010, he has practiced as a family nurse practitioner at Westside Family Healthcare, a federally qualified health center. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses and serves as a teaching assistant at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. He continues to supervise nurse practitioner students during their clinical experiences. His doctoral research is concerned with the sexual history taking practices of primary care providers, and how the information gained from these histories can used to individualize care to maintain health. He is also interested in biomedical interventions, such as oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), to prevent sexually transmitted infections, health disparities research, and naturalistic research methods. During the 2013 – 2014 academic years, Mr. Sowicz served as co-chair of the Doctoral Student Organization at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. He is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau International.
