Alexandra Michel, MSN, CNM, RN

University of Colorado PhD
Biography

I am veteran, a military spouse, and a Staff Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) working for the Department of the Army. I left my native Germany when I was 21 years old and have lived in and around the military ever since. In the process of my travels I obtained degrees in Public Administration/Information Management and Management, before settling into a career as a nurse and CNM. As a CNM I am privileged to care for our military members and their families during one of the most vulnerable times in their life – pregnancy, labor, and birth. However, in maternity care, interventions are often guided by tradition and convenience rather than evidence. My research goal is to determine if there are specific observable neonatal behaviors immediately after birth that can help us determine that neonates successfully transitioned to extrauterine life. This will help us to further research how common intrapartum interventions may affect these behaviors. However, midwifery care is more than providing care. It is a philosophy that is based on the idea of women’s choice – something that sometimes gets forgotten in a large, bureaucratic health care system like the military. My long-term goal is to help create a women’s friendly health care system. Decisions in Women’s Health Care ought to be made by women. As a Jonas Scholar I hope that I will be able to become and be the women’s support and voice so that they can feel safe to make that choice.

Igor is a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) candidate at the University of San Francisco majoring in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and is expected to graduate this Spring 2020. He is an experienced multilingual Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with a demonstrated history of working compassionately with key populations and vulnerable groups. He is skilled in nursing, management, education, community, public health, and long-term care for people with disability and chronic health issues, and primary care of various populations. He graduated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Far Eastern University (FEU) in Manila, Philippines. He holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from San Francisco State University. He is a member of the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) and currently the Public Relation Officer of the PNAA Northern California Chapter.

Igor previously work and now an intern at the San Francisco Department of Public Health in the Community Health Programs for Youth working on his DNP project, a school-based PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) for teens and adolescents in San Francisco, California. He also works part time at Peter Claver Community of the Catholic Charities – San Francisco (facility for homeless adults with mental health issues, chronic diseases and HIV, and other disability), and the Heritage on the Marina (skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility for the elderly).

Dissertation: My DNP project, the Adolescent and Young Adult Comprehensive PrEP Education Project (AYA ComPrEP) is a school-based clinic HIV-prevention service project to be implemented at Balboa Teen Health Center of the Community Health Programs for Youth (CHPY) of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH). This pilot project focuses on the delivery of a robust pre-exposure prophylaxis program to clients who are most at risk for HIV infection. At quarter of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. were among adolescents and young adults (AYA) between the ages of 13 and 24. In San Francisco in 2017, 106 young people 13-24 years old are living with HIV with 24 (11%) of them were newly diagnosed. Lack of information and access to HIV-preventive pharmaceuticals reduces opportunities to prevent HIV infection in this population.

Truvada® (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine in combination), a medication utilized as pre-exposure prophylaxis, has been shown in clinical trials to reduce HIV by as much as 90%. At CHPY clinics, PrEP has been offered since January 2016; however, the lack of knowledge regarding the use of PrEP specifically for AYA, inconsistent clinical staff compliance in routine screening and PrEP prescribing, and the need for standardized practice utilizing PrEP are evidenced by sub-optimal provision of PrEP remains a barrier to optimal utilization of PrEP in this population. At Balboa Teen Health Center, PrEP prescription is not yet available although a PrEP navigator is available once a week in the clinic for any adolescent who maybe interested about PrEP. This project aims to make PrEP available at Balboa Clinic, a first school-based PrEP in California. The project will include an in-depth interviews of staff about PrEP for adolescents, initiate a standardized HIV-risk-screening protocol and algorithm to identify adolescents at Balboa High School and the wider San Francisco and who are at risk for HIV infection and eligible for PrEP in order to increase these preventive services. The project will create an information platform for clinic staff and teachers that include a seminar, an information packet, updated fact sheets, and an online platform for clinicians and staff of Balboa Teen Health Center and CHPY regarding PrEP to increase awareness of HIV and available PrEP services for those most at risk in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Marik Moen, ACRN

University of Maryland PhD
Biography

I have almost 15 years experience in collaborative work around health disparities with a special focus on community health, HIV, infectious diseases, and nursing care and education. I look forward to gaining the competencies via doctoral scholarship to better understand and address underlying mechanisms contributing to health disparities/poor health outcomes for individuals and populations most affected by social determinants of health. In particular, I wish to translate my learning into educating others, especially nurses and policy makers, to apply in their practices. I am branching out into new but familiar territory concerning the health of veterans and similar populations and how community/public health practitioners and institutions can better serve them. I currently have an active community health clinical site partnership with an African-American congregation, the UMSOM-JACQUES Initiative and other University of Maryland Baltimore professional schools, where we strive for interprofessional community-based and community-involved service provision. Through work with AIDSRelief/PEPFAR and the Office of Global Health, partnerships with the University of Maryland School of Medicine Institute of Human Virology, I have developed HIV-infectious diseases and global health nursing education projects in Baltimore, Rwanda, and Haiti. I continue to lead activities at the UMSON Office of Global Health in Rwanda, and co-lead project in Haiti. In addition to program implementation and development of education initiatives, my clinical career spans 10 years as nurse clinician on inpatient medical/HIV services at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The University of Maryland Medical Center.

Katherine Monaghan, BSN, RN

Photo of Katherine Monaghan BSN, RN
University of San Diego DNP
Biography

Katherine Monaghan graduated from Radford University in 2005, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. While serving as a Naval Officer, she developed into an experienced and certified Intensive Care nurse. Her time in the Navy culminated as the Division Officer of the Intensive Care Unit at Naval Medical Center San Diego, earning her a Navy Commendation Medal. Katherine completed her Navy career but her commitment to serving service members continued while working for two years at Navy Health Research Center as a medical expert on injuries sustained in combat. Katherine best exemplified the duties as a naval officer during her time served in 2010, as an intensive care nurse deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan. During this life changing experience, she developed an understanding of what a combat veteran has been through and how to treat them at injury, during recovery, and beyond. After wearing the uniform for almost 9 years, Katherine decided to pursue an advanced practice nursing degree that would allow her to continue the honor of caring for veterans each and every day. Her DNP project will include targeting chronic health conditions within the veteran population, specifically hypertension. As a female veteran, Katherine is alarmed with the growing population of female homeless veterans in San Diego County. She is currently engaging with local VA homeless resource teams as well as reviewing local and state legislation to see how she can make an impact in improving care for this vulnerable population

Laura Monahan

University of Illinois at Chicago DNP
Biography

I am working on my DNP in Executive Nursing Leadership, and completed my MSN in Nursing Administration (both at UIC). I have a BA in Liberal Arts and Business from Lewis University, and a MBA from Kellogg/Northwestern University in Marketing and Organizational Behavior. In nursing, I’ve worked as a nurse educator, project manager, and staff nurse. Presently I’m teaching master’s level nursing administration students. Previously, I’ve worked as a construction welder building tanks/pressure vessels, an electrical power plant operator at a generating station, a marketing executive for residential developments, a department director of distribution transformer remanufacturing, an utility power broker for contracts over $12 million, a muralist/business owner, and have built my own house (general contractor, as well as installed the electrical systems, cedar siding, oak flooring, etc.). Through my experiences in the business and art worlds I appreciate the significance of networking/collaboration. I’ve negotiated electric power contracts in the U.S. and Canada, and collaborated with engineers, marketers, attorneys, risk managers, and other executives to achieve win/win scenarios. These negotiations involved diverse, oftentimes contradictory, collaborations to structure power contracts necessary for competitive partnerships. As an entrepreneur of a mural business, I’ve realized the magnitude of networking that advanced my professional portfolio. These applications have provided the groundwork for my interest in promoting interprofessional collaboration among healthcare students. Interprofessional partnerships developed when healthcare students are molded into the acculturation of their various disciplines are crucial to enhance teamwork and promote best quality practices for their patients.

Andrew Monasterio, BSN, RN

University of Tennessee Health Science Center DNP
Biography

Currently enrolled at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, I am a DNP-PMHNP student in the Class of 2018. As the genesis of my passion for mental health nursing, I graduated from the University of Memphis with my BSN summa cum laude while also receiving all awards given at Nursing Convocation. Additionally, I have recently self-enrolled in Neuroscience Education Institute’s Master Psychopharmacology Program. From working at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, to psychiatric hospitals and intensive residential treatment centers, I have dedicated my life to improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable and marginalized populations. As part of underrepresented areas of nursing as a male, Hispanic, LBGTQ member, and from a disadvantaged background, I want to utilize this unique, millennial-tinted lens as a nursing leader to shape the future of healthcare. Specifically, I envision nearly endless opportunities to innovatively integrate technology in mental health and education. I aim to harness emerging research and technologies to improve outcomes, engagement, and efficiency. To meet patients’ needs, both on individual and broader levels, I want to explore the evidence in novel approaches to mental healthcare: artificial intelligence, virtual reality, mobile applications, social media, and more. Beyond clinical practice, I also want to serve as faculty, focusing on developing innovative course content and curricula for future nurses. Recognized for creating such inventive student presentations at UTHSC, I have been given the opportunity to work with current faculty who are leaders in the field in developing competency-based e-learning activities.
