YanYan Wang
Biography
YanYan Wang earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Michigan State University in 2011 and he is currently enrolled in the BSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program (psych-mental health specialty) in the College of Nursing at WSU. YanYan moved to the U.S. from Shanghai, China in 2006 to begin a pre-nursing program at Western Michigan University. Despite the hardships of overcoming multiple language barriers and cultural dissonance, he was on the Dean’s list at two different universities. As adolescent in his country of origin, he experienced a cousin with severe autism who required an immediate psychiatric hospitalization. This experience of having to restrain and visit his physically restrained cousin has shaped his career choice. His bi-cultural health care experiences of acute psychiatric crises in China and in Detroit have stimulated his passion to improve the care of mentally ill individuals and advocate for the best care possible. Since his graduation in 2011 from Michigan State University, YanYan has worked in geriatric, emergency room, emergency and inpatient psychiatric settings. Currently, he practices in the inpatient psych/med unit at St John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit and inpatient psychiatric units at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Mt Clemens. His experience of working with the vulnerable population in urban settings has inspired him of having a special interest in reducing aggressive patient behaviors and the use of coercive measures in acute psychiatric care environment, and YanYan intends to focus his DNP final project on this topic.

Cynthia Ward, MSN, BC, CCM
Biography
My name is Cynthia Ward. I’m currently attending Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing DNP program and anticipate graduating Spring 2018. My clinical practice area focus on improving the quality of life in the veteran and soldier population. As a nurse advocate, I’ve been on the frontlines and in the trenches using critical thinking and innovative approaches to navigate through the very complex and convulted medical and benefits systems of the Army and Veterans Health System. In my various nursing roles in the military and civilian sectors, I’ve used every opportunity to solve seemingly complex medical/health using simple logical solutions in my patient population, thus improved outcomes. I currently hold a MSN as a Nurse Case Manager with a Focus on the Underserved Population and a Post Masters as a Family Nurse Practitioner. In 2001, I was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau and the Rural Nurse Association. I have been a catalyst for change in the Army Reserves medical readines and conceptualized many initiatives that became best practices by the entire Army Reserves. My focus was reviewing and understanding the strategic goals then defining my initiatives to align and nest with higher. Many leaders and soldiers to the lowest level were empowered through support, guidance, innovativeness, but most importantly accountability both ways. I articulated process improvement strategies to share at the lowest level. I am the recepient of many AAMs, ARCOMs, and one Meritorious Service Medal. My greatest reward is knowing that a soldier and/or veteran quality of life has improved.

Echo Warner, MPH
Biography
Echo Warner is a student at the University of Utah College of Nursing PhD program. As a first generation college graduate from a rural community, Echo is passionate about reducing health disparities, working in underserved communities, and educating future generations. Echo completed her bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science and Health where she became interested in public health and community based research. She pursued a Masters of Public Health and graduate certificate in Global Health during which she began her research career studying diabetes management among Burmese and Somali refugees and pediatric poisonings in rural Ghana. Finding her passion for public health research, and recognizing that global health includes the communities in which we all live, Echo completed her graduate practicum project studying pediatric cancer survivors’ perceptions of the Affordable Care Act at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in 2011. Over the last 5 years Echo has worked in Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. These experiences sparked her interest in the experiences of young adults (YA) with cancer. Like most cancer patients, YA do not experience cancer in isolation. Partners, family, friends and colleagues are important relationships for YA. These relationships become essential to the continued growth and development of a YA cancer patient and caregiver. Echo’s long-term goal is to support YA in their cancer experience. Echo is a member of the Delta Omega Honors Society in Public Health, the American Society of Preventive Oncology, and a student representative on the College of Nursing Research Committee.

Felita Wash-White
Biography
The love of nursing and nursing education is about having experiences for herself and others…especially minority, underrepresented nursing students. Helping and healing are the essences of what I treasure as a nurse. As a nursing educator, I integrate these to provide an oasis of support for socially and psychologically disadvantaged students. I strive to increase my students’ perceptions of their self-efficacy, self-observance, self-knowledge, and self-care. I know that no single approach is right for every unique student within my reach, and I seek to gain more knowledge about how to help these students achieve their ultimate potential. My inspiration comes from feelings of connection and needs to help others. My educational background includes BSN and MSN in Nursing Education from Indiana University Kokomo. I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Nursing and Health Innovation from Arizona State University. I have been a clinical nurse for seventeen years in adult critical care. Teaching others transcends into a sentiment of being in education for “most of my life.” I remember grading papers when I was nine-years-old. My “inherent” professional career has followed me into academic nursing. As a unit-based educator since 2012 at Indiana University Health and an adjunct and full-time lecturer in nursing education my passion is to bring together the world of nursing and academic success to as many minority students as possible. This endeavor includes mentorship, role modeling, counseling and active participation in leadership projects, presentations, and other innovative interventions that allow all us to excel.

Dissertation: Anticipated Dissertation Title: Using Mentoring as an Intervention for Inclusion, Impact, and Academic Success Diversity in nursing academia and practice remains a fervent component in recruitment, retention, and enrollment of minority students. As our nation becomes increasingly diverse, minority nurses continue to decline. Initiatives to increase nursing diversity link to various channels involving mentoring strategies. My research will be to imprint mentoring as an interventional (working toolkit) to impact minority students’ academic success.

Sarah Wedel, OCN, RN
Biography
I want to be a catalyst for change in the health care community and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to make an impact in the lives of others! I began my nursing journey by being awarded a NROTC (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps) Nursing Midshipmen Scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Upon completing my training and earning my degree, I commissioned as an Officer in the United States Navy Nurse Corps. I had the honor and privilege to care for those who have served and continue to serve our nation on an inpatient oncology/palliative care unit. I was deeply inspired by those I cared for and became incredibly passionate about oncology nursing. I decided to continue to pursue oncology and earned my Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certificate. The idea of furthering my education for the betterment of serving others empowered me to apply for graduate education. I am proud to say that I am currently beginning the 3rd year of my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at the University of San Diego. I plan to use my degree to the fullest extent and educate and inspire my patients during each visit. By completing this evidence-based practice project, I will be able to give individuals the knowledge they need in order to make their own educated decisions. I believe that knowledge is power and that it is my role as a health care provider to equip patients with the tools they need to live life to the fullest.
