The need for nurses is greater than ever. With 78,000 qualified nursing school applicants turned away from nursing programs in 2013 and over 1,300 vacant faculty positions in schools of nursing across the country, the current nursing faculty shortage poses a serious threat to our country’s healthcare.
The Jonas Center is working hard to address the faculty shortage, having recently surpassed the halfway mark towards our goal to support 1,000 doctoral nursing scholars by 2016, with 600 doctoral scholars across the country to date.

Jonas Scholars I-III (2008-2014)
There are 81 Jonas Scholar Graduates to date, currently filling leadership research and clinical positions nationwide:
- Faculty at Yale, Villanova, Indiana University, Oregon Health & Science University, SUNY Buffalo, Stony Brook University and Florida State
- Clinical Leaders at VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, NY Presbyterian, Montefiore Medical Center, VA Pacific Islands Healthcare System, US Army
An estimated 30 additional Jonas Scholars will graduate in 2014 and 75 in 2015; the remaining Scholars are expected to graduate in 2016 and 2017.

The UPenn Nursing Dean’s Medal is one of the School’s highest external awards, given at the Dean’s discretion to an individual or organization that has had a profound influence on the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and the profession of nursing or the field of healthcare. Dean Meleis counts the Jonas Center as one of the foremost partners in shaping the future of nursing.

3rd Annual Golf Classic Supports Our Veterans
|
|
We are pleased to announce that our third annual Jonas Center Golf Classic on Thursday, June 5th raised enough funds to support 32 Veterans Healthcare Scholars. Thank you to everyone who made the day such a tremendous success, both in fundraising efforts and golfer participation! We are also grateful for the support of former Secretary of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs The Honorable Anthony Principi as our keynote speaker during the luncheon, Connecticut Commissioner of the Department of Veterans Affairs Linda Schwartz as our honored guest, the Connecticut National Guard for getting us started and presenting the Colors, and to all the veterans who joined us for play that day, reminding us of the importance of supporting the nurses who help our veterans get healthy and back on their feet. Khan Academy, AACN, Jonas Center Release Online Learning Materials
|
The Jonas Center, Khan Academy, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) recently announced that 55 new healthcare lessons in 9 topic areas are now available for free on the Khan Academy website. The partnering organizations launched an international competition last fall to identify content creators interested in developing hundreds of video-based lessons with supporting questions to supplement the learning of healthcare students, practitioners, and patients worldwide. This new resource will be of particular interest to nursing students preparing for the national licensing exam – the NCLEX-RN� – since 158 sample exam questions are now included among the material posted. Over the coming months, additional content will be added to cover a total of 100 diseases.

Jonas Center Partners with Sigma Theta Tau International
|
The Jonas Center and Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) will partner to co-fund two Jonas Scholars and establish new educational tracks designed to develop nurse leadership skills and help nurse leaders prepare future nurses to meet the demands of the global healthcare system.The two doctoral nursing students selected-one PhD and one DNP-will focus efforts on: The Global Nurse Executive Leadership Institute� and International Nursing Leadership Academies. These programs will launch in fall of 2014 and will continue through 2016. Below are the two selected doctoral nursing students:

Partnership with The Mayday Fund and The Millbank Foundation
|
The Jonas Center, The Mayday Fund and The Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation will work together to support doctoral nursing students focusing their studies on pain and palliative care for veterans, an expanding group with special challenges related to care. The Mayday Fund will support two PhD Scholars and The Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation will support four PhD Scholars in the upcoming cohort who will study pain and palliative care in veterans. Below are the six PhD candidates that have been selected to receive support from this partnership beginning in fall 2014:

The American Academy of Nursing Selects General Bester as Fellow
|
|
The American Academy of Nursing recently announced that Brigadier General (Ret.) Bill Bester has been named a Fellow of the Academy – one of the most distinguished honors in nursing. General Bester was selected for his distinguished career and academic contributions to the field of nursing. He joins an elite class of 168 Fellows being inducted to the Academy’s community of more than 2,200 Fellows from around the world. Barbara and Donald Jonas were named Honorary Fellows in 2013 for their extraordinary philanthropic and programmatic contributions to nursing. Additionally, every nurse leader associated with the Jonas Center also carries the honor, including: Executive Director Darlene Curley (Fellow, class of 2012); and our Senior Advisors Claire Fagin (Living Legend, 1998) and Catherine Rick (Fellow, class of 2010).
