2019 JONAS SCHOLAR LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE DRAWS OVER 200; ADDRESSES HEALTHCARE’S MOST PRESSING NEEDS
Washington, D.C. (October 29, 2019) — This past weekend in Washington, D.C Jonas Nursing and Veteran Healthcare (JNVH), the signature program of Jonas Philanthropies, a nonprofit committed to transforming healthcare by investing where it matters most, hosted over 200 doctoral-candidate nursing leaders from across the country for its 2019 Jonas Scholar Leadership Conference. The biennial gathering united Jonas Scholars, clinicians, educators, executives and policy experts in the healthcare field to discuss critical health priorities for the country’s most vulnerable populations and learn how to advance their careers for the greatest impact.
The conference included a robust offering of six panels and talks; luminaries included:

Matthew Miller PhD, MPH, Director, Veterans Crisis Line, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Dr. Beth Taylor, Chief Nursing Officer for the Veterans Health Administration, tackled the issue of suicide prevention for veterans and America at large, including a discussion on the integration of mental health into primary care, the intersection of opioid use and sucide rates, and suicide risk amongst cancer survivors.
● Leadership in Nursing
Pamela H. Wall, PhD, RN, PMHNP-BC, FAANP, International Health Coordinator, U.S. Peace Corps and JNVH Alumni Council Member; Tener Veenema, PhD, MPH, MS, RN, FAAN, Professor, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing; Margaret Franckhauser, MSN, MPH, Director of Aging Services at JSI Research & Training; and Alana Cueto, Director of Nursing, Beacon Infusion Healthcare Services discussed the importance of leading as nurses across sectors, from academia to public health and veteran healthcare.

Marketing expert, entrepreneur and author Rusty Shelton revealed social media as an integral tool for health professionals and explored how branding can help advance a nurse’s career in just 10 easy steps, including building your personal brand to highlight thought leadership, networking across social media platforms, using hashtags to amplify reach, and understanding the importance of diversifying content.
Since founding the organization in 2006 with his late wife Barbara, Jonas Philanthropies has invested more than
$25 million in over 1,200 doctoral nursing scholars across the country. Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare, is dedicated to increasing the number of nurses with doctoral education to fulfill their high-potential leadership roles as faculty, clinical leaders and researchers.
