The goal of the Jonas Veterans Healthcare Program is to educate nurses in the special healthcare needs of our veterans to get our wounded heroes healthy and back on their feet.

Recently, the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence, Khan Academy and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing announced a competition for healthcare students and professionals.

 

We are looking for the next generation of health educators to create great content (short videos and exercises) aligned to topics covered in the NCLEX-RN examination. This content will be made available for free to anyone in the world.

Dr. Claire Fagin Receives Prestigious Awards

Dr. Claire Fagin, Jonas Center Senior Advisor, was honored twice in November:

On November 7th, The New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM) awarded Dr. Fagin with the Academy Plaque for Exceptional Service to the Academy, and on November 14th, she was presented with the Lillian D. Wald Award at The Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) 2013 Benefit Dinner.

National Conference to Address Urgent Needs of Returning Veterans

 

On Tuesday, October 8th, the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence was among several national organizations, high-ranking officials and experts gathered to discuss supporting the needs of returning veterans at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy. Titled “Work & Home: Addressing the Urgent Needs of Returning Veterans,” the conference featured policy discussions on a range of complex matters, including workforce re-entry, job training and education, and the increasing prevalence of homelessness, particularly among female veterans. The Jonas Veterans Healthcare Program served as a co-sponsor of the conference.Read more about the conference.

Barbara and Donald Jonas Inducted into the American Academy of Nursing as Honorary Fellows 

 

On Saturday, October 19th, Barbara and Donald Jonas, founders of the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence, were officially inducted as Honorary Fellows into the American Academy of Nursing. The Jonases were inducted through a ceremony considered to be the pinnacle of the American Academy of Nursing’s 40th Annual “Transforming Health Care: Driving Policy” Conference in Washington, D.C. Celebrated for their work in improving nursing education, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas have committed to support 1,000 Doctoral students by 2020. Read more about the ceremony.

200 Jonas Doctoral Scholars Convene for a Conference in Washington, D.C.

 

The Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence hosted the second Jonas Scholar Leadership Conference from October 27-29. It was an opportunity for our Scholars to understand their ability to impact the future of nursing through their work in a variety of nursing leadership positions within the realms of education, primary care and health policy. Nearly 200 Doctoral Scholars from all 50 states were in attendance for the conference in Washington, D.C. The conference was booming with excitement, as attendees were eager to discuss a wide range of topics from Veterans healthcare and the overall health of Americans, to Nursing Faculty shortage. Lieutenant General Horoho, US Army Surgeon General and Commanding General of the US Army Medical Command, encouragingly stated during her keynote address, “This is the body that I feel can have the biggest change on the health of our country.” Read more about the conference.

 Jonas Center, Khan Academy, AACN Partner to Provide Free Learning Resources for NCLEX Exam

 

The Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence (JCNE), Khan Academy and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) announced on October 1st a partnership to create free, peer-developed, and expert-reviewed online resources to help nurses prepare for professional practice and sit for selected portions of the National Council Licensure Examination� (NCLEX-RN�). The partner institutions will sponsor a competition for nursing students and other healthcare professionals to create video tutorials and exercises for specific NCLEX-RN content areas, including physiology, pathophysiology, and management of health conditions.
