Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare and the Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Development Program, Inc. Award Five Scholarships to Advance Oncology Nursing

NEW YORK, July 21, 2021 – Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare and Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Development Program, Inc. are proud to announce the recipients of a joint scholarship program to five doctoral nursing candidates seeking to improve healthcare for cancer patients. The scholarships represent the second cadre of Jonas-Flynn Scholars in the history of the partnership. . To date, nine Jonas-Flynn scholarships have been awarded, including the initial cohort of four Jonas-Flynn Scholars in 2019.

The following recipients are all DNP candidates pursuing doctoral degrees with a specialization in Oncology Nursing:

  • Michelle Laspino, BSN, RN from Fairfield University School of Nursing and Health Studies is an Oncology Nurse at Hartford Healthcare Cancer Institute. Her career goal is to be an Oncology or Palliative Care APRN. Ms. Laspino was a Flynn Fellow at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in 2015.
  • Carissa Corraro, BSN, RN from Fairfield University School of Nursing and Health Studies is an Oncology Nurse at Bridgeport Hospital (part of Yale Health System). Her career goal is to be a Nurse Practitioner and also teach future nurses at the university level. Ms. Corraro was a Flynn Fellow at Stamford Hospital in 2018. 
  • Emily McClure, BSN, RN from Boston College is an Oncology Nurse at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Her career goal is to be a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner. Ms. McClure was a Flynn Fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital in 2016.
  • Anne Martin, BSN, RN from Baylor University is currently a Pediatric ICU nurse at Children’s Hospital of Colorado. Her career goal is to be a Pediatric Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner. Ms. Martin was a Flynn Fellow at Children’s National Medical Center in 2018.
  • Rachel Zhang, BSN, RN from Boston College is currently a Cardiology Nurse at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her career goal is to be a Pediatric Bone Marrow Nurse Practitioner. Ms. Zhang was a Flynn Fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital in 2019.

The scholarships are made possible by a grant from the Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Development Program, Inc. to Jonas Philanthropies, Inc.

Flynn Oncology Nursing Development Program. “We are also grateful for this unique collaborative opportunity to continue our support of oncology nursing clinical practice and research in order to improve the prevention, treatment, and quality of life outcomes for cancer patients and their families.” 

The Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship Program was created by Mr. Flynn in loving memory of his wife who died of ovarian cancer in 2013. Out of respect for the wonderful quality of nursing and palliative care she received during her illness, the program was developed to help stimulate the career interests and foster the professional development of potential Oncology Nurses. Since its inception in 2014, 202 Flynn Fellows have completed this unique Fellowship program. Of the 186 Flynn Fellows in the workforce so far, 131 are already working as Oncology Nurses.
