Jonas Scholar Alumna Joins Community Health Center’s Weitzman Institute

Dr. Wanda Montalvo Joins Community Health Center’s Weitzman Institute as Associate Director

MIDDLETOWN, CT; December 10, 2015: Community Health Center, Inc. (CHC), Connecticut’s largest primary care provider for underserved populations, announces the appointment of Wanda Montalvo, PhD, RN as Associate Director of the Weitzman Institute (WI). Dr. Montalvo will expand WI’s work promoting innovation in primary care through research, quality improvement, and training.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Montalvo began her career at Sunset Park Community Health Center, one of the largest health centers in the country. Prior to joining CHC, Montalvo was the advisor and reviewer for the Jonas Center for Nursing and Veteran Healthcare, Partners Investing in Nursing, CDC/NIH National Diabetes Education Program, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars.

Dr. Montalvo has provided leadership at the state and national level, including as Northeast Custer Director for the National Health Disparities Collaborative sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Bureau of Primary Care Health. In this capacity, she worked with health centers on quality improvement methodologies and the use of the Chronic Care Model to improve diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease, depression and cancer screening.

Dr. Montalvo earned her Bachelors and Master’s degrees at Long Island University School of Nursing. She completed an RWJ Nurse Fellowship and was a Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar. She received her PhD from the Columbia University School of Nursing where her research focused on Leadership and Political Skill Preparedness of the doctoral prepared nurse, specifically looking at the correlation between mentoring, leadership and political skill.
