Biography

Allison Perkins, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC is a Medical-Surgical Telemetry Clinical Nurse Specialist at the San Diego VA Healthcare System. Ms. Perkins received her MSN from University of San Diego in 2005 and her Bachelors of Science in Nursing and Spanish from Niagara University in 2000. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Ms. Perkins is responsible for the clinical practice and competence of the staff she supervises. Some highlights from Ms. Perkins career at the VA include the creation of an RN Transition to Practice Residency (RNTTP) Program for all new graduate RNs. In addition to the RNTTP, she created a RN Preceptor Program to ensure that nurses had the tools needed to successfully precept new hires and orient them to the facility. Ms. Perkins has chaired the Nursing Practice Council for the facility for the past 5 years. Ms. Perkins had presented numerous podium and poster presentations on clinical practice issues and Evidence Based Practice Projects at both local and national nursing conferences. She is the president of the San Diego Chapter Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) and has sat on several national AMSN committees. Ms. Perkins recently completed her first year of the PhD program at the University of San Diego. Her research will focus on “Screening Veterans for Delirium Risk Factors upon Hospital Admission.” She selected this topic due to the devastating effects this condition can have on the Veterans she serves. She hopes that by conducting her research, it will lead to improved patient outcomes for the Veterans.
