Mary Schaeffer, MSN, PMHNP-BC

Hunter College of CUNY DNP
Biography

Currently, I am just about midway through the Doctorate in Nursing Practice program at Hunter College. My Capstone project will commence next semester. I began my graduate Nursing studies at Hunter many years ago, and eventually completed the Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. After becoming an Advanced Practice Nurse, I worked in the Psychiatric Emergency Room of Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn. During the time I worked at Coney Island, I was also able to work both in the Assertive Community Treatment program and the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Three years ago, I moved to the Brooklyn Veterans Administration Medical Center in the Outpatient Mental Health Department. In this position, I work with a multidisciplinary team providing treatment for veterans and service members with Post-Traumatic Stress disorder. As of now, I expect to continue my career in this department for many years to come. Since the beginning of my practice as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I have been a preceptor for Master’s students in psychiatric nursing, mainly for students from my alma mater, but also for students from New York University and Stony Brook. Despite making the switch to the Brooklyn VAMC, I keep my Emergency Room skills sharp by working in the Coney Island ER once a month. Finally, when I began studying for the Doctorate in Nursing Practice at Hunter, I was offered a position as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor for Master’s Psychiatric Nursing students.
