University of Kansas DNP
Biography

I started the DNP program in January 2013 with a specialty in Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. I graduated with an associates degree in nursing from Hillsborough Community College in 2001. I completed my BSN in 2008 from the University of South Florida. During my ASN program I was one of two students awarded for academic excellence in nursing. After my associate’s degree I began working in a pediatric cardiovascular floor at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida. After my baccalaureate I began working at a level one trauma center in the neuroscience intensive care unit where I had the opportunity to care for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Most recently, as a graduate teaching assistant (GTA) I have observed how students have utilized simulations to learn how to provide patient care. These simulations have given students the opportunity to practice in a safe environment that increases their knowledge and confidence. In addition, while a student at KUMC I had the opportunity to attend a sponsored simulation education conference for interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. At the University of Kansas School of Nursing, I will have the opportunity to work with one faculty member that has expertise in TBI and one that has expertise in informatics and educational simulation. With the guidance of these two experts I hope to explore how to develop a residency module for doctoral nursing practice students to help them in identification and diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury through an educational simulation.
