Cheryl Nickolaou, MSN,FNP-BC; BSN-RN, BA-Ed

Oakland University DNP
Biography

I am currently in the DNP program at Oakland University, in Rochester Hills, Michigan. My particular interests in research involve pediatric and adolescent health with regard to respiratory disease, adherence to treatment and the effects of the environment. I first began my career as an educator in the public school system in the inner city in Los Angeles, CA. It was at this point I noticed the influence of education on maintaining health. I later received my BSN at Madonna University, Livonia, MI and worked in a variety of settings, along with having the opportunity to experience healthcare while living in Europe. After teaching nursing at small school for vocational nurses, I decided to return to school to obtain my MSN to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I am currently practicing in an asthma, allergy, pulmonary practice that includes pediatric and adult patients. My interest in combining research, education and nursing practice, has brought me full circle to the DNP program at Oakland University. In addition to my nursing role, I also am a member of the National Ski Patrol, and teach Outdoor Emergency Care, and have done so for the past 12 years. In addition to this, I am the Regional Young Adult Program Advisor and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity, where I am the Historian/Reporter for my alumni group. I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau, MICNP, and ANCC and have been happily married for 28 years, with 2 children.

Mirsada Nurkanovic, RN

University of Vermont DNP
Biography

My nursing experiences span over two decades and two continents. In the spring of 1993, I finished nursing school in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I started working at the regional hospital. After the war in Bosnia ended I joined an American company that provided support to US Army during their Peace Keeping Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina as a nurse and interpreter. In 2002 I moved to Vermont and continued working in the healthcare industry in a wide variety of roles (phlebotomist, lab tech, and medical assistant) for the next 12 years in a couple of Vermont primary care clinics. Although it was a right place for me, I felt the drive to continue my studies in nursing. In 2014 I finished undergraduate studies (Professional Studies with the focus in Psychology) at Johnson State College and started Direct Entry Program in Nursing at University of Vermont. Today I am full-time Doctorate in Nursing Practice student at the University of Vermont and per diem registered nurse at Richmond Family Practice and Appletree Bay Primary Care. My current field of interest is wellness and disease prevention, especially in the area of diabetes and obesity. I plan to explore this topic in more detail during my doctoral project. Additionally, I am very interested in increasing awareness of intercultural issues in the health care industry and working with the growing and underserved immigrant and refugee population in Vermont.
