North Dakota State University DNP
Biography

My name is Lisa Vaca, I am from a farming town in California, called Visalia. After high school I choose to enlist in the United States Navy. This ended up being the best decision I made for my career. The Navy is where I developed my passion for nursing. I enlisted as a Hospital Corpsman and I was able to serve on active duty for 6 years. I was stationed at Naval Medical Center San Diego, Fleet Surgical Team 9 aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard LHD-6 and at Miramar Marine Corps Airbase. The military granted me the opportunity to pursue my passion of caring for people. I graduated from University of Mary, Bismarck, ND with a Bachelors in Science in Nursing. The work ethic I learned in the Navy carried over to nursing school, as I graduated with honors and received both Sigma Theta Tau and Student Nurse of the Year distinctions. My love for emergency care motivated me to pursue a position at the Sanford Emergency Department in Bismarck, ND where I have worked for nearly 5 years. Applying to graduate school was important to me, I want to play bigger role in caring for patient’s and become an agent of change in rural North Dakota. While attending NDSU Doctor of Nursing program I anticipate the pursuit of research in diabetic care in adolescence. I hope to raise awareness of importance of prevention, early detection, and management of diabetes in North Dakota adolescents in the rural primary care setting.

Claire Valderama-Wallace, MS, MPH, RN, PHN

University of California-Davis PhD
Biography

I am now completing my second year of the Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Doctor of Philosophy program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. I will take my Qualifying Exam in the fall in preparation for a qualitative dissertation exploring nurse educators’ perspectives about social justice and health equity in nursing education. My interviews will focus on their conceptualization of health equity, explore pedagogical approaches, and describe factors that shape how they incorporate principles of justice. Prior to becoming a nurse, I worked in public health and developed an understanding of the importance of local health departments in my work at the National Association of County and City Health Officials. My commitment to understanding and addressing structural inequities is largely rooted in my involvement in several community-based organizations serving various marginalized populations. During the past five years, I have been a clinical instructor and lecturer in programs across the SF Bay Area, most recently at California State University, East Bay (CSEUB). I will begin my appointment as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Community Health Nursing at CSUEB in September. I will teach community health nursing theory and clinical courses for the traditional BSN and ADN-to-BSN programs. Moving forward, I aim to contribute to the integration of justice and equity in nursing education, broaden that understanding to patient outcomes, and further develop my ability to embody culturally relevant and critical education that privileges counter narratives and promotes healing.

Sarah Valentine-Maher, RN, FNP

University of Massachusetts-Amherst PhD
Biography

After graduating from a liberal arts undergraduate program I began work as an intern with the Women’s Environment and Development Organization in New York. While participating in the organization’s international conference on women and environment I was struck that, again and again, when sharing experiences and testimony, women reflected on the relationship of environmental degradation and health. The impact of this experience led me to nursing. I find great promise in the place that engagement with environment (social, natural and built) holds in nursing identity and role. I am interested in understanding barriers and catalysts to more fully manifesting nursing’s engagement with environment so that nurses may expand the lived reality of practice and, thereby, our impact on human wellbeing. I have worked as a nursing assistant, a home health aide, a RN in home health and migrant health and as a Family Nurse Practitioner with an asthma center in an inner city setting. I have participated in research and scholarly writing and have served as a nursing faculty member. I currently serve as an adjunct instructor with William Paterson University and Simmons College and am a reviewer for The Journal of Nursing Education. Work in my immediate community includes foundational work on development of a program that will extend the work of a rescue squad to health promotion and health assessment for non-acute home visits. I look forward to PhD study at UMass Amherst and to joining the Jonas Scholars program.

Ashlee Vance, MA, RN, RNC-NIC

Duke University PhD
Biography

I am a PhD student at Duke University School of Nursing. My primary research interest is to understand trajectory of parental role confidence in parents faced with caregiving challenges of having an infant with a complex chronic condition. My long-term goal is identify patterns among trajectories to better understand how interactions with the hospital environment, care delivery models, and individual factors influence the development of parenting confidence. This information will be used to develop targeted intervention strategies to increase parental psychological wellbeing and improve infant health and developmental outcomes. My academic training, research experience, and clinical background have built an excellent foundation for understanding the challenges associated with parenting the medically complex or high-risk infant both in and out of the hospital environment.

My proposed area of research interest is in nursing workforce issues, particularly related to empowerment and workplace engagement of nursing staff. There is limited research on nurses who work in the managed care environment, especially related to those who work as telecommuters. As healthcare continues to change, it’s important to learn more about this population of nurses.
