Dissertation: Title: Sleep and Mild Cognitive Impairment Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional stage between normal aging and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Progression from MCI to AD often results in severe decline in everyday function and can lead to institutionalization. Interventions that effectively delay or stabilize cognitive decline and improve everyday function in MCI are critically important. A promising opportunity for stabilizing cognitive decline and improving everyday function in MCI is treatment of comorbid conditions that may accelerate their decline. One such condition is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is effectively treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. However, many people have difficulty adhering to CPAP therapy at a therapeutic level (at least 4hr/night). There are multiple factors that may contribute to successful adherence of CPAP therapy in persons with MCI. Current dissertation research aims to explore personal, environmental, and social contributors to CPAP adherence in individuals who participated in a larger interventional study aimed at evaluating the impact of CPAP therapy on the progression of neurocognitive impairment over the course of a year in persons presenting with comorbid MCI and OSA.

Christine Maloney

New York University DNP
Biography

Being a nurse for over 35 years, and a GNP for almost 20, I have witnessed a tremendous change in healthcare. With my focus over the last years concentrated on the elderly, this population’s healthcare has been the most volatile. I am involved with many programs and services that are designed to assist the senior population, but due to changes in policies, many elders are excluded and even forgotten. The time has come for those of us who are educated and qualified to begin to develop, promote, and pursue legislation that will support this fragile population. Education of the nurse leader is critical so that they understand what is needed, can develop specific policies and protocols, and then educate other nurses as well as the general population to produce healthcare that benefits this most needy community. If I am fortunate enough to receive this Jonas scholarship, I will continue my education at the DNP level in hopes of achieving my goal as a joint appointed professor that also allows me to continue my clinical focus in an academic setting. Shauna Mangum, MSN, RN

University of New Mexico PhD
Biography

I was raised in a small rural community in southern New Mexico and have been a life-long resident of the state. I graduated from nursing school with an ADN from San Juan College in Farmington, NM in 1999 and continue to call this community home. My experiences as a school nurse led me to an awareness of vulnerable populations and health disparities among the population of students I worked with. I became inspired to further my education to gain some understanding and have a foundation in order to address health issues these children faced. I graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a BSN in 2011 and a MSN focusing in nursing education in 2014. I am currently an Instructor of Nursing at San Juan College teaching both clinical and didactic portions for second semester nursing students in a concept based curriculum. My area of focus in teaching is the concepts of health promotion, family, community, culture, spirituality, health care disparities, and vulnerable populations. It is my plan to continue to teach these areas of nursing to raise awareness of population issues that affect community health outcomes. I am also a PhD student at the University of New Mexico studying in a program that will focus on health policy. My interest in research will address health policies that focus on adolescent health issues related sex education provided in the public schools.

Lisa Mansfield, MSN, RN

Photo of Lisa Mansfield MSN, RN
Duke University PhD
Biography

Lisa Mansfield is a first generation college graduate from Bridgeport, CT with clinical experience in medical-surgical nursing. She earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her Masters of Science in Nursing Education from Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). Lisa became interested in pursuing a career as a nurse scientist after attending various research conferences on health disparities during her undergraduate studies. In 2014, Lisa began her graduate studies where she was accepted into the second cohort of the WSSU-Duke University School of Nursing Bridge to the Doctorate program. As a Bridges scholar, Lisa completed a master’s thesis using secondary data analysis to examine the association between parental HPV knowledge, awareness, and their intentions to vaccinate their daughters. From the work on her thesis, Lisa was selected as a top student poster to present to the president of the UNC school system, the recipient of the School of Health Sciences Achievement Award, and received her first, first-author publication in the Western Journal of Nursing Research. Lisa is continuing her work in HPV research as a PhD student at Duke University School of Nursing. Her dissertation will focus on exploring social determinants of HPV vaccine completion among U.S. adolescents. In addition to her doctoral studies, Lisa serves in various leadership roles within the School of Nursing. She is the secretary of the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, a student representative for the Bridge to the Doctorate Program, and mentors current Bridges scholars and first year PhD students.

Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Scholar – Preventive Health
Dissertation: Social Determinants of HPV Vaccine Completion among Adolescents The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. and is responsible for causing 70 to 90 percent of all genital, anal, and oral cancers. Racial and ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected by these outcomes. Vaccination during adolescence is recommended before sexual activity to prevent HPV and associated cancers. However, national adolescent vaccine rates remain low with completion rates lower than initiation rates, especially among minority youth. The purpose of this dissertation is to identify individual-, relationship-, and community-level determinants of HPV vaccine completion among adolescents ages 11 to 14 and barriers and facilitators to completion among parents and adolescents. A parallel mixed-methods design will be used to integrate information from electronic health records (EHR) with qualitative data from individual interviews with parents and adolescents to determine social determinants influencing vaccine completion. Findings from this study will guide future research on multi-level intervention studies that prioritize social determinants of HPV vaccination completion to reduce barriers experienced among parents and adolescents.
