Julie Earls, BSN, RN

Photo of Julie Earls BSN, RN
Fairfield University DNP
Biography

My name is Julie Earls and I just started my second year at Fairfield University in their Doctor of Nursing Practice-Family Nurse Practitioner program. I currently work at Yale New Haven Smilow Cancer Hospital on the Hematology-Oncology unit. I have been there for three years and I love it. I have learned so much about chemotherapy and how to care for cancer patients as well as patients undergoing bone marrow transplants, and just recently Car-T cell immunotherapies. I was on a cardiac-observation unit for a year before that also at Yale New Haven Hospital.
I am doing my capstone project on education guidelines for neutropenic patients at discharge. I have seen a deficit in this area where I work, and I want to improve how patients and their families learn and follow these important instructions when they are discharged with low white blood cell counts.
I graduated Fairfield University in 2015 with my bachelor’s in nursing. I had the honor of being a Flynn Fellow at Stamford Hospital my junior going into senior year summer where I interned on the oncology unit.
I was the recipient of the 2015 Mu Chi Student Performance Award as part of the Sigma Theta Tau honors society at Fairfield University my senior year. I absolutely loved my time at Fairfield University when I was an undergraduate, and have loved my experience in their graduate school of nursing.

Katie Edwards, RN

Clemson University PhD
Biography

My name is Katie (Andrews) Edwards and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Healthcare Genetics at Clemson University in South Carolina. I am excited that this program effectively combines my backgrounds in biology and nursing. As an RN, with experience in neuro/trauma ICU and rehabilitation, I have found that nurses have significant opportunities to impact the lives of their patients, peers and community. Of note, my nursing specialty in neurology has vast opportunities for genetic research. Being exposed to these areas of nursing enhanced my interest in genetics and neurology, especially the clinical application of these sciences. I am passionate about healthcare, teaching, and the study of science to improve people’s lives. Since my freshman year of college, I have worked at least part-time in healthcare (10+ years) and have found the work fulfilling; especially neurology. Through tutoring peers, teaching at a learning center, and my recent RN positions, I discovered that I enjoy teaching. My current position as a graduate teaching assistant to nursing students in medical surgical clinical settings has solidified a long-time desire to teach at the university level. I believe my desire to teach can directly apply to a future career in genetics, through education of patients, the community, and my ultimate goal of teaching at the university level in a school/college of nursing. This opportunity via the Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar Program will have a lasting impact on my professional life as I apply myself in the fields of genetics, neurology and nursing education.

Robyne Eisenhauer, MSN, RN

Duquesne University DNP
Biography

My interest in the military veteran population developed early in my life and nursing career. My father was in the U.S. Army and my father-in-law was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the U.S. Navy. This initial interest continued to evolve throughout my career as a nurse. I had the opportunity to work for the Lebanon VA Hospital as a clinical nurse educator for several years. During this time my daily exposure to veterans cultivated an awareness and respect for this unique patient population. As a DNP student at Duquesne University I plan to assess the spiritual needs of veterans and facilitate a referral with a hospital or community based spiritual advisor. Long-standing JCAHO mandates and recent VHA initiatives require a spiritual assessment to be completed on all in-patients. This project will generate holistic improvements in the overall health of veterans. Following more than 15-years in the acute care setting I obtained a MSN from Millersville University and transitioned to academia. In my current position as the Simulation Lab Director at Alvernia University I have worked with faculty to develop new and significant simulation experiences in the undergraduate program. The eventual transferability of my project will occur through the creation of a healthcare simulation involving undergraduate nursing students and veterans from the campus Veterans Center. As an educator at Alvernia I have served as advisor to the local student nurse association, coordinator of a 3-year HRSA grant and maintained membership our local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.

Kristina Ennis, RN

University of Missouri-Columbia DNP
Biography

I am currently in the DNP-FNP program at the University of Missouri. I studied Microbiology for five years, but unfortunately, my Mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I took a break from school to help with her treatment, and it was at this time I decided to pursue a nursing degree. I worked in an inpatient cancer unit for the past 3 1/2 years. Breast cancer patients are my research and clinical practice interest area. I grew up in a very rural community, and therefore, have always had a passion for working in rural health. Upon completion of my degree, I plan to work in a rural health clinic. I believe rural individuals are often forgotten and do not have adequate access when it comes to healthcare. It is important to provide competent, high quality care to all individuals, including those in a rural setting. Rural individuals are diagnosed at later stages and have less access to treatment. I would like to volunteer time as part of a mobile screening team that goes into rural settings to provide free cancer screening to these populations. I am starting a new job in September as a clinical instructor. I have a passion for teaching and believe it is important to provide each student with the knowledge and opportunity to succeed. I am currently working towards a minor in nursing education, and would like to instruct at a nursing school upon graduation.

Elise Erickson, MS, NP, CNM

Oregon Health and Science University PhD
Biography

My interest in research, particularly in women’s health and midwifery, began at the University of Michigan while pursuing a Bachelors degree in Nursing. My interest in women’s health and childbirth rests on the significant lack of research-based care practices and a belief in the physiologic approach to childbirth for healthy women. At the University of Illinois-Chicago, I earned a Masters degree and became a Certified Nurse Midwife. I have practiced for 11 years performing outpatient women’s health care and attending birth for women with high and low risk pregnancies. I developed an interest in the behavioral neuroscience of oxytocin while practicing and attended a graduate program in neuroscience in Chicago as well. After moving to Oregon, I resumed both my clinical practice and research study in a PhD program at Oregon Health & Science University. Now in my dissertation phase, I am exploring the bio-behavioral effects of oxytocin on lactation and breastfeeding. My study examines oxytocin both naturally released by birthing women/ lactating mothers as well as that given as a pharmaceutical treatment during childbirth. I am a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives and have served the local chapter as Secretary in the past. During my neuroscience graduate program I received a pre-doctoral research fellowship from the NIH. Currently, I serve the School of Nursing on the faculty Research Council and the PhD Curriculum Committee. I am fortunate to have received several scholarships and awards throughout my academic career and am honored to be Jonas Scholar.
