Maloch(aka Bilsboroug DNP
Biography

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of San Francisco in 2013 where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with school honors and was invited into Sigma Theta Tau International Honors Society. As a new graduate I worked at City of Hope National Medical Center on a bone marrow transplant and hematology floor. I then worked at various outpatient surgery and endoscopy centers before moving back to San Francisco. Currently I am in the dual degree Master of Public Health and DNP- Family Nurse Practitioner program at the University of San Francisco with an anticipated graduation date of May 2020. I currently work at Stanford on the inpatient oncology and hematology floor.

Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Scholar – Environmental Health
Dissertation: I am in the dual degree Master of Public Health and DNP- Family Nurse Practitioner program. I plan to focus on environmental carcinogen exposure by creating an education tool for the oncology patient population I currently work with. I will use a risk reduction strategy to focus on attainable changes and also provide information on their risks. While I currently work on an inpatient oncology and hematology unit, I would like to create a tool that can be implemented in the primary care setting as well. I have been working with oncology patients for around 4 years and have noticed that we receive a higher number of patients from the central valley, or areas where there seems to be higher environmental risk factors from pesticides and chemicals. This, along with my coursework, sparked an interest in environmental health which I feel needs to be a major focus for prevention.

Sara Baker, BSN, RN

University of Michigan-Flint DNP
Biography

Currently, I am Dean’s List student pursuing my Doctorate of Nursing Practice for Family Nurse Practitioner at University of Michigan-Flint and am a 2011 graduate from Grand Valley State University with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing. The focus of my graduate level capstone project is increasing patient satisfaction scores via cultural competency training to staff. Patients often receive care that is not tailored to their culture or subculture whether it be their ethnicity, work environment or interests. Providing culturally sensitive care can help the patient feel that they are included which can, in turn, increase their satisfaction. Career wise, I have been actively involved in improving patient safety through involvement in various committees including CLABSI/CAUTI champion, ethics steward and hand hygiene coach. While in graduate school, I have been an active member of the Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners and a new inductee into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. My current role as the president of the Student Nurse Practitioner Association at UM-Flint has been an excellent way to get myself and the members out into the community as volunteers and also into the legislative arena for nurse practitioner rights. Sitting as the student representative in the graduate student affairs committee has allowed me to make sure the student body’s voice is heard when decisions are made regarding curriculum and policy changes. Also, being a graduate student research assistant has strengthened my leadership and organizational skills while also gaining many valuable networking connections.

Dorota Bartoszczyk, MSN, RN, OCN

University of Iowa PhD
Biography

Dorota Anna Bartoszczyk is originally from Poland where she lived 21 years. She has been in the United States for total of 16 years now, and during this time she’s lived in four different states, with Iowa being the longest. All of her nursing education is from the College of Nursing, the University of Iowa. Dorota’s research interest area is related to barriers and difficulties nurses are challenged when providing pain management. Even though we are better at managing our patients’ pain, many difficulties remain in this important area of nursing care. She has been working as a staff nurse at the UIHC for the last eight years on the adult hematology oncology and palliative care unit. In the last two years, she started working with surgical oncology patients as well. Dorota chose the University of Iowa College of Nursing PhD program because, in her opinion, it’s simply the best program. The excellence of faculty, learning opportunities, closeness and collaboration with the UIHC, and Iowa City’s charm make this program truly outstanding. While unsure of exactly what she’ll be doing after completion of the PhD program, Dorota hopes to always stay close to patients and clinical settings. With this in mind, a nurse scientist at a hospital sounds an appealing and viable option.

Basilia Basin, BS, RN-BC, PhD Candidate

Oregon Health and Science University Hartford Center PhD
Biography

I am a clinical nurse, educator, and leader with experience caring for older adults with chronic disease. Prior to nursing, I was a licensed small animal veterinary technician. My experience as a nurse and a technician provides a unique perspective, and expertise, to research the relationship between older adults and pets and their influence on decision-making. Furthermore, my specialized interest in older adults with pets is aligned with the Gerontological Society of America’s research priorities in human-animal interaction. My PhD core coursework is complete and I successfully defended the dissertation proposal. During the course work I worked closely as a research assistant with a nurse focused on gerontological transitional care. I recruited participants, collected and analyzed data. This mentored position provided real-world experience about the research process. Additionally, I am actively involved as a student leader who reinvigorated the Graduate Nursing Senate. I organized quarterly meetings and encouraged all graduate nursing students to attend; participation has been exceptional. Furthermore, I also work as a nurse educator. As a nurse educator I participate in shared governance and lead many education projects for the whole organization. Recently, I shared education about nurse peer feedback and won an award for an informational poster about peer feedback. Overall, I am a nurse who is dedicated to the lives of older adults, elevating the nursing profession and leading the way in human-animal interaction research of older adults.
