Amauche Obi-Eyisi, RN

Hunter College DNP
Biography

I came to the United States in 2007 to obtain an undergraduate degree. I obtained my BSN from Hunter Bellevue of Nursing in 2011 and today I work as a public health nurse in Central Harlem. My school clinical experiences were very different from my experiences as a public health nurse. I am currently pursing the DNP in Advanced Public Health Nursing because I want to be able to empower public health nurses and give them a voice. The field of public health nursing is so vast and largely under represented. My goal is to bring some level of recognition to the field. My research and clinical interest is to find cost effective ways in treating bedsores with slough or eschar. The institute of health launched the triple aim agenda in 2013 and since then my organization Visiting Nurse Service of New York has been looking for ways to cut cost while achieving patient satisfaction and optimal care. I have been a visiting nurse for three years, I love what I do and it has given me the opportunity to practice the romanticism of nursing. I have received awards from my organization such as Initiative award (for nurses who demonstrate initiative, perseverance and risk taking) and I have also received an ABCD award, which stands for going Above and Beyond Call of Duty. I am thrilled to be a JONAS-VNSNY Scholar very grateful for the opportunity

Pete ODonnell

Vanderbilt University DNP
Biography

I came to nursing later in my professional career after working in public policy development, public administration, and owning a small business. My goal has always to make the world a better place, and to try to help others realize their greatest potential that they determine. Since becoming a nurse, I have worked at a local jail, for Portland Public health; and since becoming a nurse practitioner have worked with people who are homeless, refugees and immigrants and people who have no means to pay for their health insurance. My intended doctoral project is to find ways to link behavioral health services into primary care sites. I have often seen people who come into our clinic, and to other primary care sites, who have an underlying mental health disorder and they are not diagnosed and screened for a potential mental health disorder. I would like to work on a protocol that provides for the screening of mental health disorders when a person comes in with certain somatic complaints.

Research/Clinical Practice Area: Jonas Scholar – Chronic Health
Dissertation: Title: The relationship between clinical symptoms and laboratory findings as an indicator for malarial chronic low-density parasitemia. Synopsis: In 2010, an estimated 3.3 billion people were at risk of malaria worldwide (Iwuafor et al., 2016). Approximately, eighty percent of the malaria adjusted deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa with the most vulnerable populations of children under-five and pregnant women (Oyekale, 2015). Although there has been a reduction in all-cause mortality in malaria endemic regions of sub-Saharan African, malaria is the fourth leading cause of childhood mortality (Jakubowski et al., 2017). Individuals with low-density infection contribute to the transmission cycle but are difficult to capture because they may lack symptoms. This study will focus on malarial signs and symptoms, laboratory markers, and its relationship with low-density parasite infection in high endemic and low endemic regions in order to aid in identification of these individuals.
