Hampton University PhD
Biography

Jawanza Bundy has provided healthcare to women across their lifespan for over 23 years. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Hampton University. Deciding to continue her commitment to women’s healthcare, she went on to receive a Masters of Science in Nursing and a Post Master’s Certificate at the University of Pennsylvania in the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and the Nurse Midwifery Programs, respectively. Upon receiving her PhD, her plan is to “pay it forward” by becoming faculty at a university that is committed to diversifying the nursing workforce and to continue research involving mentoring. Mrs. Bundy wholeheartedly believes, “A day without learning, is a day without living.” She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, and is a recipient of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation Scholarship, and the Penn Medicine CAREs Grant.

Kirk Butler, BSN-RN, CCRN

Photo of Kirk Butler BSN-RN, CCRN
University of Minnesota DNP
Biography

Kirk Butler is currently a Doctor of Nursing Practice – Nurse Anesthesia student at the University of Minnesota. Kirk attended the University of Missouri on an ROTC scholarship and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. While stationed in the Pacific his experiences recognizing the impact an anesthetist could have on a Soldier’s health led him on a career trajectory towards critical care and nursing anesthesia. When a leadership opportunity with a combat unit was available, he transferred to JBLM, Washington to join the 3-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team surgeon cell. This experience exposed him to the damaging effects of war on Soldiers coming back from deployment. These experiences would gravitate him back to the bedside to pursue nurse anesthesia. Veterans represent a unique population where chronic pain issues affect the population with higher prevalence rates than non-veterans. Often chronic pain is the most common denominator to many of the deleterious effects on Veterans mental health space resulting in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, substance abuse, and addictive behaviors. Veterans with untreated chronic pain can lead to non-healthful coping alternatives such as misuse of alcohol, drugs, and risky lifestyle choices to deal with the negative consequences of persisting pain. Better pain management strategies can prevent the damaging effects that unremedied chronic pain can have on a Veteran’s health. As a CRNA, Kirk has the novel perspective of being a Veteran seeking to support improved pain management modalities to taper the effects of chronic pain leading to mental health compromise.

Dissertation: Becoming a nurse is more than learning a set of skills and doing tasks. It involves an understanding of who nurses are, how they practice, and the why and what they do. This process involves the inclusion of one’s attitude, behavior, integrity, accountability, and ability to respectfully communicate with others. However, every individual nurse is different in their perception of what nursing ought to be, and how they respond to the nursing profession. Thus, throughout their nursing education, nursing students’ socialization into the profession may evolve. For my dissertation research, I will examine the Socialization of Nursing Students into the Nursing Profession. The aim of this research is to identify the socialization process of pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing students into the nursing profession. Notably, most of the nursing socialization research has been conducted with senior nursing students, new graduate nurses, as well as established nurses enrolled in masters and doctoral nursing programs. This study will explore nursing students’ socialization across the sophomore, junior, and senior academic levels.
